Oral Language Lessons
To the right is a 6-page document outlining a series of 9 lessons we are using with our students at the beginning of the year, in order to set them up for successful in-class, academic dialogue. Ideas were taken from a variety of Board and Ministry documents, and woven together a sort of introductory "mini-unit" in hopes that equipping students with the tools needed for effective conversations in class would aid in their mathematical learning (and in our teaching).
Although many of the lessons were introduced using chart paper or a pocket chart and cards, we did turn some of the lessons into Smart Notebook 11 Files (see below). Please feel free to modify for use in your own classroom.
We're just getting started... more coming soon!
(For lesson 8, suggest "interrupting" the lesson and having students practise paraphrasing their partner's comments to ensure active listening.)
Check out this blog post for a few more lessons Ms. Teschow did later in the fall, using rich mentor texts. (Not math-related, but building on the work earlier in the year, from the lessons posted above.)
